Projects Widget

Focus Only On The Next Step

Overview

With all of your projects in a system you trust and prioritized, now it is time to get to work and only focus on the next step of the next couple of projects you should be focusing on.  All of the other projects (and tasks) should stay safely behind the scenes, out of view, and off your mind.  This task is what the Projects Widget will do for you.

Setup / Configuration

To configure the Projects Widget, start at the Foresight Today window:

  • Click on the Configure Foresight link in the lower right-hand corner of the window.
  • Click on the Today Tab (shown above) if it is not already the selected tab.

Display Projects By

The Projects Widget can display projects in one of two ways, depending on how you like to work - in a project-centric way or a task-centric way.

Project Category

Selecting this option will cause the Projects Widget to display projects who's project category matches the one selected in the Projects Widget's Category selection box.

You should use this option if you like to work in a project-centric way.  For example, you categorize your projects between "work" and "home" and want to see projects based on this project category.

Task Category

Selecting this option will cause the Projects Widget to display projects who's next task's category matches the one selected in the Projects Widget's Category selection box.

You should use this option if you like to work in a task-centric way.  That is, when you are at home, you want to know what projects you can work on next, whether they are "home" or "work" projects, because they have tasks you have categorized as "home."  Another example; even though you might have "home" and "work" projects, you might categorize some tasks as "phone calls."  Then, if you pick "Phone Calls" in the Projects Widget, you will see all phone calls you need to make at that moment, regardless of if the project is for "home" or "work."  Using this setting can be a powerful tool to let you maximize all available time for all of your projects.

Show Items Coming Due In Next X Days

This option controls how far out the Project Widget should look in considering what projects to display.  If the due date on a task is more than "X" days beyond the current day, the Projects Widget will keep the project / task out of sight and out of mind.

Setting this to zero (0) will only show tasks on the day they are due and not before.

Using

The Projects Widget truly lets you focus on the next step of the most import three (or so) projects.

It will display more projects if things are due today, or become overdue.

It will keep all other projects and tasks hidden away; safely contained in a system you can trust.

You can mark tasks as completed by clicking on the checkbox to the left of the task:

The completed task will remain displaying for the day -- allowing you to visually gauge your progress through the day -- not to mention that great feeling of seeing things getting done!

The next task may, or may not, display for that same project - depending on if the Projects Widget determines that such is the next important thing to be working on.  The Projects Widget uses a proprietary system and looks through a variety of factors, including due dates, priority, and the order you place things in, to determine what to display next - allowing you to not have to play a shell game of project management and simply focus on your work.

Refreshing the List

To refresh the Projects Widget list, click the Refresh link at the bottom of the Foresight Today page.  This is done to display an updated list, such as after checking items off the list, making changes on the Project Whiteboard or to a project itself.
